Room Integrity Fan Testing

Veterans Fire Protection Inc.

Room integrity fan testing (or door fan testing) is a critical procedure, required by NFPA 2001 standards, that measures the airtightness of an enclosure protected by a gaseous fire suppression system by installing a fan in a doorway, technicians pressurize and depressurize the room to calculate leakage, ensuring the agent remains at a 85% concentration for at least 10 minutes to prevent re-ignition. Recognizing the critical role these devices play in emergency situations, our experts go beyond mere compliance – we tailor our services to meet the unique fire safety needs of your environment.

Key Aspects of Enclosure Integrity Testing:
  • Purpose: Measures the Equivalent Leakage Area (ELA) to determine if a room can hold fire suppressant gas long enough to extinguish a fire.
  • Methodology: A specialized fan is temporarily installed in the doorway to simulate the pressure of a discharge. The test calculates the "hold time" (how long the gas stays) and the "peak pressure" (maximum pressure exerted during discharge).
  • Requirements: NFPA 2001 demands this test for clean agent systems to ensure effectiveness.
  • Process: The test is performed upon installation and usually annually, involving both pressurization and depressurization.
  • Components:
    Leakage Test:
Measures the total area of all gaps, cracks, and holes in the room.
Pressure Test: Assesses the structure's ability to withstand the discharge.
Below Ceiling Leakage Area (BCLA): Often required for rooms with drop ceilings to identify specific ceiling-level leaks.
  • Importance: Ensures that penetrations for pipes and cables do not compromise the system, allowing the agent to escape.

If the room fails to maintain the necessary pressure, the fire suppression system may not operate effectively
